Heating Vessels: Protection from Pressure

Hot water systems are designed to be robust but must be protected from pressure surges, which can cause all sorts of damage. It’s universally agreed that the way to protect the system is with the installation of an expansion vessel, also known as a heating vessel. Once installed they offer lasting protection from excess pressure and, when you buy from a trusted supplier like HECAS, you can be sure that the product complies fully with EN 13831 according to the EC Pressure Equipment Directive (PED).

The liquid inside a closed water heating system is always on the move. Sometimes, it may stop suddenly or even completely change direction, creating an impact that causes system damage. These impacts are known as ‘water hammers’; they are just as damaging as they sound and so heating vessels are designed to soften the impact with a cushion of protective air.

It is not only the physical movement of water within the system that causes water hammers and related damage. There is also the thermal expansion to take into consideration, whereby water increases in volume the hotter it gets. Extra pressure is created and discharged throughout the system but the expansion vessel cushions the blow and prevents the water hammer from happening.

Heating vessels are very often used in conjunction with a domestic hot water system and this means that they along with all associated components, need to comply with drinking water regulations. Our entire range of domestic vessels is manufactured with these standards firmly in place and the integrity of every vessel we sell is guaranteed. On top of our wide selection, peace-of-mind guarantees and impeccable customer service, we also deliver consistently competitive prices to ensure you always get a good deal with HECAS.

Heating vessels form only part of the broad HECAS range of sealed system components, which also features such essential complementary items like brackets and pressure gauges. A range of buying options are available, with fully-comprehensive kits that provide everything you need for a complete installation in a convenient package.
